DIY Maintenance Tasks
Bleed Your Radiators
When: Start of heating season, or if radiators have cold spots at top
- Turn off heating and let radiators cool
- Place towel under radiator valve
- Insert radiator key into bleed valve (top corner)
- Turn anticlockwise until you hear hissing
- When water appears, close the valve
- Check boiler pressure (top up if below 1 bar)
Clean Shower Head
When: Every few months, or when flow reduces
- Remove shower head if possible
- Soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes
- Scrub holes with old toothbrush
- Rinse and reattach
Check Stopcock Works
When: Annually, and when you move in
- Locate your stopcock (usually under kitchen sink)
- Turn clockwise to close
- Check water stops at taps
- Turn anticlockwise to reopen
- If stiff, turn back and forth gently to free it
Important: If your stopcock is seized or won't turn, get it replaced. You don't want to discover this during an emergency.
Clear External Drains
When: Spring and Autumn
- Lift drain covers carefully
- Remove leaves and debris by hand (wear gloves)
- Flush with hose or buckets of water
- Replace covers securely
