Boiler Safety Checklist: Signs Your Boiler Needs Attention

Essential boiler safety guide. Learn the warning signs of a dangerous boiler and when to call a Gas Safe engineer.

7 min read Updated March 2024

Why Boiler Safety Matters

A faulty boiler can be dangerous. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from boilers kills around 50 people in the UK each year and hospitalises many more. Regular servicing and knowing the warning signs can save lives.

If you smell gas or suspect CO poisoning:
  1. Open windows and doors
  2. Turn off the gas at the meter
  3. Leave the property
  4. Call National Gas Emergency: 0800 111 999
  5. Don't use electrical switches

The 10-Point Boiler Safety Checklist

1. Check the Flame Colour

Your boiler flame should be crisp and blue. If it's yellow, orange, or lazy-looking, this could indicate incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide production. Call a Gas Safe engineer immediately.

2. Look for Soot or Staining

Black marks or soot around your boiler, or staining on walls nearby, can indicate a combustion problem. This needs professional inspection.

3. Listen for Unusual Noises

Some boiler sounds to watch for:

4. Check for Leaks

Any water around your boiler needs attention. Even small leaks can indicate internal corrosion or failing seals.

5. Monitor Your Boiler Pressure

Most combi boilers should run at 1-1.5 bar. If pressure is constantly dropping, you may have a leak in the system.

6. Test Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm

You should have a CO alarm near your boiler and in bedrooms. Test it monthly and replace batteries annually.

CO Alarm Placement: Install at head height, at least 1 metre from the boiler but in the same room. Also place alarms in bedrooms if you have gas appliances upstairs.

7. Check the Ventilation

Boilers need adequate ventilation. Never block air vents or store items against your boiler.

8. Look at the Age

Boilers over 15 years old are less efficient and more prone to problems. Consider replacement for safety and savings.

9. Check Your Service History

When was your boiler last serviced? Annual servicing is essential for safety and efficiency.

10. Review Your Gas Safety Certificate

Landlords must have one. Homeowners should keep service records. This documents that a Gas Safe engineer has checked your appliances.
